It’s clear Hayne’s stellar performances during the preseason — which resulted in him earning a place on the 49ers’ 53-man roster instead of the more realistic proposition of the practice squad — has raised the level of expectation about how quickly he could transition to the American game to unreasonable levels. This was always going to be a long-term project. Hayne, and the 49ers, knew from the start he would have to become a viable option at running back to hold his place in the team. Learning the intricacies of this position was always going to take at least a couple of years. But he was such a natural punt returner, the 49ers felt it was worth including him in the game day line-up from the opening game of the season. And instead of celebrating this for what it was — a remarkable achievement — some instead looked to take potshots at the Aussie rugby league convert because the huge gains he produced in the preseason suddenly dried up.
